Arsenic and Dilapidated Lace has been a family Halloween tradition for years. In some ways it might be called the recent panic spoof: Two sweet traditional ladies poison lonely mature men as a “charity” and bury them in the cellar, and no sooner does their stable nephew glean out about this (while preparing to leave for his honeymoon) than his long-lost homicidal brother returns with a face like Frankenstein’s monster.
Cary Grant knew his method around a comedy, so it’s easy to fill when his character Mortimer grows more and more frazzled throughout the night, jumping from one quandary to the next so rapidly that he can’t even remember he’s fair been married that day. In his state, juggling four insane relatives (three of them killers), a handful of cops, and two expressionless bodies, we’d all feel the worse for wear. The lope is snappily, almost frantic at times; complications and set twists advance faster than anyone in the movie can handle them. The only characters who aren’t perturbed and thrown completely out of their elements by the affair are the rest of the Brewster family, who are all crazy anyway.
The shadowy comedy genre is paunchy of films that are a limited too graphic or disturbing for kids (and even some adults), but this one’s not quite so black, and wildly laughable enough to entertain all ages. And no matter how young or venerable you are, no matter how normal a family you have, you won’t be able to relieve but chuckle when the harried Mortimer takes a breather to elaborate to his modern wife: “Insanity runs in my family…. It practically gallops.”

The DVD transfer is flawless; the clarity is fabulous. Pop some popcorn and observe it with the whole family.
Frank Capra delivers a expansive film adaptation of Joseph Kesselring’s Broadway hit, “Arsenic and Conventional Lace”. Originally filmed in 1941 impartial prior to WWII, but not released until 1944 because of the contract agreement to allow the play to complete its Broadway urge. (The play ran for 1,444 performances.)
Cary Grant in the leading role as nephew, Mortimer Brewster is at his comedic best in this dark comedy of wine, family & insanity. His 2 improbable Aunts played by Josephine Hull & Jean Adair were encored to the camouflage and are perfect in their roles. Boris Karloff’s obligations prevented him from doing the movie and was replaced by Raymond Massey in the movie version as Grant madcap brother. The vast ensemble cast also included Peter Lorre, Edward Everett Horton, Priscilla Lane & John Alexander as a luscious zany crazy, thinking he is President “Teddy Roosevelt”.
Summary: It is Halloween, Mortimers wedding day & his life is about to change forever. Visiting his 2 Aunts (Hull & Adair) with his wife (Lane - Ministers daughter!) on their diagram to their honeymoon to Niagara Falls discovers a body in the window seat. Thinking his crazy cousin, (Alexander) has committed the crime approaches his Aunts. They not only know about the body, but they know who he was & how he died. Their elderberry wine laced with a mixture of arsenic. Oh by the diagram, he is the 12th to be buried in the cellar. What is Mortimer to do & is his entire family insane? In the 1600s, the Sanderson sisters bewitched people. The three aging women, lusty Sarah, portly Mary, and nefarious leader Winifred, were particularly fond of performing a distinct spell that would preserve them alive and young forever, with advise expend of course. Unfortunately, that particular spell required a living child as the key ingredient! One fateful Halloween night, that terrible honor went to adorable limited Emily Binx, sister of teenaged Thackery, who immediately ran to his sibling’s support when he heard she’d been lured by Sarah Sanderson to the witches’ home in the woods. This was not a well conception out idea though, and the cost was not only the life of his sister Emily, but his believe humanity as well. Emily’s lifeforce was drained from her body by the three Sanderson witches, and big-brother Thackery Binx was transformed into an immortal unlit cat, cursed to live forever with the guilt of his failure to place his sister! Luckily for the rest of the children of Salem, the Sanderson sisters were captured that night and hung for their crimes, but not before their living book of spells revealed to them a curse to bring the three attend from the uninteresting on All Hallow’s Eve when a virgin lights the shadowy flame candle.

300 years later, teenager Max Dennison is a newcomer to Salem, struggling to adjust after growing up in a California lifestyle. It isn’t going well for Max. Bullies are stealing his sneakers legal off his feet, the girl of his dreams snubs him due to his lack of interest in Halloween, and his limited sister, Dani, is ever the pest. Now, he must employ the evening escorting her door to door for trick or treating while their parents luxuriate in the town Halloween dance. Things are about to go from awful to worse for Max, however. Honest when he believes things are looking up after he and Dani convince dream-girl Allison to engage them to the traditional Sanderson house, Max’s efforts to label the girl lead him to light the black-flame candle himself, bringing Sarah, Mary, and Winifred Sanderson attend from the tedious! From there on out, it’s a non-stop, fun-filled plug as the witches pursue the children, certain to earn sassy-mouthed Dani the subject of their next youth spell, which must be performed before dawn or else the witches will be gone forever! With the immortal, talking shaded cat Binx guiding them along, Max, Dani, and Allison work together to outrun, outwit, and outlast the putrid trio and their magical arsenal, with the fate of all the children of Salem hanging in the balance!
In “Hocus Pocus,” director Kenny Ortega, who also gave us the equally underrated and delectable cult-classic “Newsies,” brings us a perfect Halloween movie that’s actually ample fun any time of year! With a extraordinary cast headed up by the legendary Bette Midler and “Eerie Indiana’s” Omri Katz, awesome music (Hey, Disney, where’s the soundtrack?!), a hilarious script that incorporates all the Halloween essentials, and quick-witted special effects, “Hocus Pocus” easily ranks as one of my approved films of all-time! Moments such as the bus scamper, the encounter with the motorcycle cop, the visit to the Master’s house, and, of course, the Sanderson sisters performing “I Save a Spell On You” at the town party unprejudiced accomplish this movie fun, fun, fun! The witches may be creepy at times and totally perilous, but they have a Three Stooges vibe going throughout that keeps things from getting too scary. However, this film CAN be a bit powerful for younger kids. Yes, despite feeling generally like a typical Disney live-action flick from the `90s (a expansive time for Disney live-action), there are some surprising moments. The witches do off runt Emily in the beginning of the film by stealing her “essence,” they do employ some level-headed swearing and the virgin joke is unnecessarily hammered into the ground, and, yeah, some folks might collect sure aspects scary, but only the very young I’d wager. Basically, this film was targeted at `tweens and teens, and, had they gone to notice it, it would probably have been a hit. Unfortunately, it wasn’t till uncover airings on the Disney Channel that most people discovered this gem of a holiday film. As for me, I saw it in theaters and am so tickled I did! I wish we’d accumulate more Halloween films like this one! This is how I like to glance witches on Halloween! Cackling, riding brooms across the sky, and hunting trick or treaters! That’s the plan of Halloween witches that afraid me as a kid, and that’s what I’d like to look more of in Halloween films today! The DVD is sadly bare-bones. Totally disappointing for such a spectacular cult classic! Level-headed, it is without a doubt a must hold for annual viewings at the very least!

This movie is criminally underrated. First of all, the film wasn’t the flop people believe it is. It did over 45 million at the box office. Okay, that settled, let’s dig in. Three witches from the 1800’s are hung for taking the souls out of children in Salem, Mass. Exhibit day Salem, a lonely teen resurrects the three hags accidentally while visiting their used cottage that has turned into a mini museum. The witches, well cast and perfectly played by Bette Midler, Sarah Jessica Parker, and Kathy Najimy, place out on Halloween night to lift the souls from the children as they trick or treat. The three lead actresses are perfect in their roles. They really bring them to life. This is a fun, light hearted film that the whole family can appreciate. The setting and decoration is perfect and has that titanic Halloweeny feel. There’s also a humorous cameo by Penny Marshall and Garry Marshall as husband and wife(but who are dependable life brother and sister in case you didn’t know) . This is a valid vast vehicle for Bette Midler. She fits perfectly. You’ll also leer Thora Birch(American Beauty) as the small sister. The film is a fabulous family treat that will delight and entertain the whole family.

Like a good dream, Sofia Coppola’s Lost in Translation envelops you with an aura of fantastic light, moody sound, head-turning love, and a feeling of deja vu, even though you’ve probably never been to this neon-fused version of Tokyo. Certainly Bob Harris has not. The 50-ish actor has signed on for big money shooting whiskey ads instead of doing something good for his career or his long-distance family. Jetlagged, helplessly lost with his Japanese-speaking director, and out of sync with the metropolis, Harris (Bill Murray, never better) befriends the married but lovelorn 25-year-old Charlotte (played with heaps of poise by 18-year-old Scarlett Johansson). Even before her photographer husband all but abandons her, she is adrift like Harris but in a total entrapment of youth. How Charlotte and Bill discover they are soul mates will be cherished for years to come. Written and directed by Coppola (The Virgin Suicides), the film is far more atmospheric than plot-driven: we whiz through Tokyo parties, karaoke bars, and odd nightlife, always ending up in the impossibly posh hotel where the two are staying. The wisps of bittersweet loneliness of Bill and Charlotte are handled smartly and romantically, but unlike modern studio films, this isn’t a May-November fling film. Surely and steadily, the film ends on a much-talked-about grace note, which may burn some, yet awards film lovers who “always had Paris” with another cinematic destination of the heart. –Doug Thomas
