Now that DVDs are design down in stamp, I’ve ended up with literally thousands–I believe. I have a tendency to resist the earlier releases, the ones that are obviously “cheapies” with no special features–I know that better editions are unprejudiced around the bend for most films! But I recently had to do an exception for “Poltergeist”. Now I had originally seen this film in a theater on its release. I have always considered it one of the best in its genre. I’ve seen it a couple of times since, but probably not at all in the last ten years (and for the record–all the sequels were awful) .

What amazed me was that I smooth idea it was a terrific movie! Now, some people will deem a couple of the effects are cheesy–and for today’s standards, maybe they are. But they are so well integrated into the film that I don’t believe the fresh viewer will mind. And I fill films are historical documents–I abominate that George Lucas, for example, has corrupted his films with constant CGI updates. It’s as sacrilegious as colorization was!

“Poltergeist” succeeds as a colossal film due, in tremendous fragment, to it’s unrelenting suspense–but, in equal measure, it relies on us to care about the family fervent. I assume the movie endures because it has heart and characters to actually root for. Craig T. Nelson and JoBeth Williams are substantial (and believable) as the parents affected. Their treasure for each other and their family, and their willingness to sacrifice anything for the safety of their kids is well presented and acted. Williams, in particular, has never been better. At first, she is your typical suburban Mom–but as unusual things initiate happening, you gawk her confusion, her delight, her terror, her fright, her desperation and her fearless side. It’s a very nice underrated performance. And Beatrice Strait and Zelda Rubenstein both give richer, more fully realized performances than I remembered.

Who’d have thought–all these years later–that it’s the characters of “Poltergeist” that have celebrated it in my mind?

It’s time now! We need a Deluxe Version DVD. It’s hard to contain 2007 will sign 25 years–that seems a fitting opportunity to honor a film that has stood the test of time. I’ll be first in line to upgrade. KGHarris, 9/06.

This is one of my common movies, and I’ve reviewed the earlier DVD order elsewhere. My review this time is purely for the novel DVD reissue which is one of the biggest disappointments I’ve reach across. Let’s initiate with this “25th Anniversary.” The only mention of the anniversary is a haphazardly placed sticker on the outer sleeve. The fact that it was fair slapped onto the box gives the buyer an opinion of how remarkable notion went into this unique DVD.

Then there are the extras. A documentary about true-life hauntings. Okay, that’s not terrible. But wait - where’s the modern trailer for the film that was on the earlier DVD? It’s been removed. Did the trailer net sucked into Carol Anne’s closet and is being held captive by the Beast? What purpose did removing the trailer support?

This is a pointless release. My advice is to hang onto the earlier release which is anamorphic AND has the trailer and skip this one; there will be another, hopefully better, release someday. Warner Brothers should be ashamed.

There really is no region, yet you don’t care. There’s no proper subtext to the entire thing, but that doesn’t matter. The actors are all kids and they play baseball…and it’s SO SIMPLE.

One of those puny films that walked quietly into theaters in 1993 and left honest as quietly with minute fanfare(which is probably why Fox was hesitant on releasing a DVD) not ONLY happens to be one of the greatest SLEEPERS of all-time, it’s also one of the greatest SPORTS films of all-time, ranking with “Field of Dreams”, “Bull Durham”, “Major League”, “The Natural”, and “The Longest Yard”, to name a few.

This movie is estimable, so sweetly and innocently Righteous, that you don’t care if the defective happens or that a main plot-point happens to be the kids retrieving a prize/signed baseball(by Babe Ruth of all players) from the jaws of a dog-beast-monster-thing.

No, if there was something that James Earl Jones was factual about in FIELD OF DREAMS(and he’s in here too as a modern-day Boo Radley), it was that baseball brings us succor to the times when we were young and apathetic to the world around us. The same applies here.

This film will create you forget about your problems and redirect your focus on your youth and the times you had fun with your best friends.

No matter if those times were spent on a surburban street where the tainted poles were really parallel phone poles on either sides of the street or you sat on the porch watching us while drinking lemonade and listening to Ray Charles, those are the helpful times we remember…

The DVD has a radiant 2:35.1 widescreen transfer(it was originally shot in 70mm Panavision) but is lacking in extras. Composed, a marvelous cheap DVD with a stout film…that’s all we ask for sometimes.

Back in 1993, two movies enthralling baseball and children, The Sandlot and Rookie of the Year, came out in the theaters about the same time, both being released by Twentieth Century Fox. I remember Rookie of the Year was pushed hard by the studio while The Sandlot got powerful less advertising and publicity, which was too dreadful because I always understanding The Sandlot was a worthy better film.

Scotty Smalls, his mother (Karen Allen), and his step dad (Dennis Leary) fair moved into the neighborhood and Scotty is having problems acclimating himself to his social surroundings. An shining boy (an egghead), he lacks positive abilities most boys have, like radiant how to salvage and throw a ball, any basic baseball rules, or who’s the Tremendous Bambino. The movie does an favorable job in providing fair enough depth into these characters to provide a sense of the family dynamic given that Allen and Leary have runt conceal time. In attempting to join a neighborhood grasp up game, Scotty’s lack of rudimentary baseball skills is made painfully apparent, to which all the boys except Bennie, the best player of the bunch, let their derisive comments glide. Bennie, feeling a bit sorry for the current kid, gives Scotty a couple of tips and a dinky extra serve in a well hit waft ball that gives Scotty a measure of confidence and helps bring him into the gang. Once Scotty’s current into the group the movie delves into a dwelling absorbing a priceless baseball and a local dog with a mythical reputation. What I really liked was how all the boys came together to aid a friend in need, and it was an automatic response. If someone in the circle needs befriend, the group rallies around, regardless, as they would have done the same for any other member. While a seemingly natural trait in children (atleast in this movie), it seems to be one that becomes lost as we grow older, as seen in Scotty’s step dad and his reluctance to play bag with Scotty because he has too worthy work and doesn’t have the time. What is so titanic about this movie is while it’s area in the 50’s, the epic appeals to most anyone. Whether or not we all had that one spacious summer or unprejudiced fond remembrances of childhood friends and activities in general, the movie serves to support consume days when things were simple, and summers were made up of endless possibilities. While watching this movie, I conception about friends I had when I was a kid, phrases we aged, nicknames, activities, etc.

No staunch extras on this disc, but a huge presentation of a incredible movie. My approved portion eager one of the boys called Squints, a smaller boy with large, stout glasses, and scene with curvaceous, older, female lifeguard at the local pool.
